Well Woman Exam Q & A

  • What is a well-woman exam?

A well-woman exam is a routine checkup to assess your health and wellbeing. During your exam, your practitioner reviews your health history, discusses any symptoms and concerns you may have, and screens for diseases.
Dr. Mann also offers lifestyle counseling to encourage a healthy diet, regular exercise, and healthy habits.

  • Women have unique health concerns and needs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 13% of adult women in the United States are in poor health. Roughly one-third of women over 20 have the risk factors for serious health problems like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. These include:
    High blood pressure
    Lack of aerobic exercise
    Obesity
Your well-woman exam is important because it’s the best way to stay on top of your health, detect disease, and stay strong and active for many years to come.

  • Your well-woman exam has four components:

    Health History

Your practitioner reviews every aspect of your health, including your family health history, OB-GYN health history, emotional wellness, and current symptoms or concerns. You should mention any changes in your health, lifestyle, or medications since your last visit.

    Physical Exam

During your physical exam, your practitioner checks every part of the body for clues to possible health problems. She takes your weight and blood pressure and conducts a breast exam. During your breast exam, your practitioner checks for dimpling, discharge, lumps, and other abnormalities.

    Pelvic Exam

Dr. Mann performs a pelvic exam to check the health of your internal and external genitals. During your pelvic exam, she conducts a Pap smear to screen for cervical cancer and HPV. It's also a good time to talk about your sexual and reproductive health and fertility.

    Health Assesment

Your practitioner concludes your exam with a discussion about the results of your physical exams and any concerns. She may prescribe medication, order additional testing, or recommend simple changes you can make to improve your health. Feel free to ask questions and become involved in your care. You take care of your job, your family, and your home, but nothing is more important than taking care of you. Give yourself the gift of a healthy lifestyle beginning with a complete well-woman exam.
